Festival Activities

On Saturday January 23 and Sunday January 24, we offered hands-on animation workshops for kids 7 and up and presented playtime activities from all over the world by our special guest from the Netherlands

Animation Workshops (every 30 min, 11:30 am - 2:30 pm)

Animation Workshops Sold Out!

The workshop consisted of two half-hour segments: a half-hour preparing an animation character, and a half-hour for filming.

Story artist Matthew Luhn has his photo taken on April 4, 2008 at Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville, Calif. (Photo by Deborah Coleman / Pixar)Valerie LaPointPixar storyboard artists, Matthew Luhn and Valerie LaPointe, offered two amazing animation workshops to children at the festival who pre-registered through the BAICFF website. Students learned how to create animated flipbooks, and created claymation with a hand-made animated character sculpted by an actual "Gumby" artist. By the end of the festival, students got to see their claymation onscreen; and were able to take home their clay animated characters, animated flipbooks, and a DVD copy of their animation.

The workshop returns for BAICFF 2011 - How it works:

Animation WorkshopUpon arriving at the festival, pre-registered participants must sign up for a time-slot to shoot their animation (or choose a time-slot online). The first shooting slot is at 11:00 a.m. and lasts 30 min. There are a maximum of 3 participants per time-slot. During their time-slot, children will animate their character using a stage, lighting and camera under Pixar's Valerie LaPointe's guidance.

Preparation (at least 30 minutes):

Prior to the shooting time-slot, Matthew Luhn will help each participant create their own unique claymation character best adapted to stop-motion animation. Time and interest  permitting, Matt will also teach participants how to create flipbooks and other animation techniques.

Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your assigned time slot to have enough time to create your character before the shoot.

Supervision:

Parents and family can continue to enjoy the festival programming during the workshop. All activities are supervised by at least two adults, however at least one parent needs to remain in the theater at all times.

Screening:

From 3 pm to 5 pm, Valerie and Matt will edit the animation of the day's participants, add music to the films, and prepare them for screening before the 5 pm feature. Participants will then have access to a DVD of the finished product.

Space is Limited:

Space is very limited (only 3 kids per time-slot) and slots will be assigned on a first come first served basis.

Playtime with special guest Jules Oosterwegel (2:15 pm Saturday and Sunday):

Jules OosterwegelWe were honored to have a special guest filmmaker, Jules Oosterwegel from Amsterdam, attend BAICFF 2010. Jules travels around the world capturing children playing street games on film -- so far, he has documented 300 games in 21 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, and Oceania. He does this as a personal mission, financed by his elementary teaching career. His goal is to preserve the cultural heritage of play for future generations and to improve the physical and social health of today's children. (http://www.2ukids.nl/)

Jules Oosterwegel

After the 1pm features on Saturday and Sunday, a selection of Jules Oosterwegel's short films were screened and as a special treat, he taught some of the street games to the children.

Participation was open and free to any child and parent attending the festival.
